Social Media: Boasting About Your Big Deal? Big Mistake.

Lately, I have mentioned in various ways that you should definitely make your presence known on the web and through social media channels. Something you should NOT do, however, is share that you believe you are about to close a big sale or that you just have.

I continue to be amazed at the number of people who put on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media sites that they closed a big deal with a particular person or company or they expect to soon. Yes, it's great to close a sale, but broadcasting the news to everyone? You've got to be kidding! Throwing out a specific name or even hinting of a name or location of a potential customer or big deal can and will spell trouble.

Here's why: First, it may very well get the customer thinking they paid too much since you're suddenly boasting about your success. Second, it signals to your competition and others what is going on and what you are doing.

My rule is simply this: If you even have the slightest doubt about sharing news of a sale, don't share it. And certainly do not share anything about a specific customer or business transaction unless that customer has given you clear permission to do so.
